In a shared hosting environment, auto update feature is not possible. The maximum that can be done is notify the owner in the adminarea that updates are available!!!

If you notice, I posted that feedback in 2006. We have come a long way since then I think this feature is very much possible so it is definitely a probable candidate for next version feature list.
